Get Rid of Self Destruction Once and For All

Sabotage–This ain’t no Beastie Boys Song

self sabotage

Why do we keep pushing that button

Over the weekend we watched a show on TLC about a 600 pound mom. Other than the normal enabling that goes on in a situation like this, one other thing stood out to me–sabotage.

This has got to be one of the biggest reasons for falling off of the diet bandwagon.

I know that I’ve been guilty of this.

In the show, Dominique, has basically gotten so big that she can not leave the house under her own power. It takes 6 EMT’s dragging her on a tarp in to the living room where they can put her on a reinforced gurney.

Dominique has food addictions, but she doesn’t want to come clean about that.

She makes the trip to see a bariatric surgeon that won’t operate on her if she’s over 500 lbs. Then she’s put on a special scale, and it’s revealed that she’s over 600 lbs.

In order to receive the surgery that the wants/needs, she has to lose over 100 lbs. She’s put under a doctor’s care, who prescribes a special diet, and even has the food delivered to her.

She ends up losing something like 35 lbs. right off the bat.

After a few days of eating the special diet, she begins begging for the good stuff from her daughters.

Into the third or fourth week, and she’s gained a few pounds. Somebody who is never revealed, caved into Dominique’s requests.

That’s when the sabotage begins. Pop, sweet tea, fried foods, etc. She starts down the slippery slope.

The show ends before she reaches her goal, but the producers leave the impression that she is working her way in the right direction.

  • Keep goals in mind. Write them down on post-it notes. Put them everywhere that will remind you of your goals.
  • Get support. Ask friends and family to respect your goals, and for them to help you.
  • Take time daily to focus on what’s really important to you. For instance if it’s important to exercise, think about that and make sure that it’s ingrained in your mind.

You may not be 600 pounds, but how do you sabotage yourself?

A lot of people do that. And I am guilty of it some days. In fact I’m sick today and what’s sitting here in front of me? Soda pop. I’m such an addict to it.

@Alyse, you’re not alone. I’m a slave to diet soda and/or energy drinks. I’ll go out of my way for a Monster Zero.

  4. I have a friend begging me to get a friend on TV to get them to lose weight. I said it’s not about TV, that person has to actually want to make a change and be willing to have a complete lifestyle overhaul. I also said I was way too busy.

Julie, send your friend our way. We can help. :)
