Form over function?

Select the right clothes to workout in.

This is a quick one because frankly, we just got home from a Vegas trip, and I’m wiped out. But you, our valued reader deserves nothing but our best.

Here’s the scenario-while in Lost Wages, we stayed at the Luxor. One of the great things about this hotel is that they do not charge extra to use their fitness facilities, unlike most of the bigger resorts on or off the strip.

I’ll go more into my overall workout experience on Friday. Today though, I want to talk about workout attire. Is it better to look good, or to dress for function?

For those that know me, when I’m not dressed for work, I’m either wearing running pants, or cargo shorts. And as of late, I have been training in my shorts. On Friday I was wearing my shorts, which are uber comfy, but apparently aren’t meant to be worn when doing squats. With this in mind, I had a wardrobe malfunction of the worst kind.

Yep, you guessed it, while doing squats I bottomed out-in more ways than one. I blew out the whole backside of my shorts. Thankfully there just weren’t that many people in the gym that early, or that might have been embarrassing. Who am I kidding, it was a red-faced moment regardless. Not only did I have to put away all of the equipment, but then had to walk from one end of the gym to the other. Then, I had to high tail it through the lobby, up the elevator, and down the hall to our room.

First, it’s a good thing that I didn’t go commando that day. Second, cargo shorts may not be the best thing to be wear for squats. Sure, they’re comfy. Obviously I need something with a little more flex and give.

What do you wear to the gym? Are you putting form before function?

At least you didn’t forget athletic shoes, I hope. Nothing funnier than seeing dress shoes with black socks and shorts in the gym.

I workout in a small weight room. It’s not unusual to see holy (holie? holee?) t-shirts and sweats, myself included.

For me, I can’t have my attired being a physical distraction while I work out. I don’t care how my workout clothes appear, it’s never a fashion show, especially where I train.

I used to have this thing about never wearing shorts or sweat pants that had pockets when I work out. I’ve gotten past that, but I just can’t wear a t-shirt with a pocket, plays with my mind too much.

@Aaron That made me laugh about the shirt with the pocket. I’m the same there. No, I didn’t forget the athletic shoe. I’ve gotten into wearing my sandles (the ones that strap on) when I train. The low sole really helps when squatting.
