Don’t Let Fear Get In Your Way

The Great Bambino drives it long

No Fear!

Babe Ruth once said, “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.”

Countless times I’ve had the mother of all business ideas, yet failed to launch. I was scared. Afraid of failing. Maybe even a bit afraid of succeeding.

Fear is no excuse. Step up to the plate, and give it your best shot. I know that I’ve missed out on some awesome things over the years, all because of a fear. That is no way to live.

There’s a very good reason that karaoke is really only found in bars. Alcohol, a.k.a. liquid courage, lowers the inhibition shield. With your shields lowered, things happen. Perhaps finding yourself up on a stage, doing your best Steve Perry. Weird how it always sounds so much better in the shower.

It seems hard to believe, but a lot of people hold back on their fitness goals. This is simply because they were afraid of actually making it. On a conscious level, many wouldn’t admit to that. On a subconscious level though-well, that’s another story all together.

The good news is that you don’t have to fear failure. “Why?”, you may ask. Because I promise that you are going to stumble.

Just don’t give up, and all will be well. Well, that may seem easier said than done. The important thing to remember is that in the long haul, you only fail if you give up.

With that said, sometimes goals will shift. That’s okay. Don’t worry about that. Seriously, don’t get hung up on goals. They’re important, but they’re a moving target.

In life we may make a fool of ourselves. There is the possibility of doing a gigantic face-plant. I promise you one thing though-you’re going to have one a heck of a time in the process. Just keep at it.

  2. Todd – I really love this post! It’s funny, because I’m so capable in many areas of my life, the fitness thing is so weird and scary. I was never an athlete. I never had a “big” weight problem. I’m not particularly competitive (although I’m questioning that one).

So I’m not the person who will put on shoes and run a 5K or kick-arse in a cross fit class. I’m not as strong or tough – mentally or physically – as my “fitness” peers. But I just keep at it – I celebrate ALL the victories – regardless of how small or silly others might think they are – and I enjoy the journey.

I’m so grateful that I’m not afraid of what you might think of me, or not being able to keep up, or… or… or…

I just smile & giggle, and keep at it – at my little “wogging” (walk + jog) pace LOL

@Kris, that’s an awesome attitude. That’s exactly how it should be. I’m glad that you enjoyed the post.

The great thing to remember about this post is that even the great Babe Ruth only hit the ball one-third of the time… No guts, no glory, right?

  5. Todd says:

@Greg, You’re exactly right. His record for the most strike outs stood until the 60′s, when another Yankee, Mickey Mantle, surpassed it.

  6. You’re super good at keeping people motivated. I’m going to rip you off.

  7. Todd says:

@Julie, I consider that a huge compliment. Rip away!

  8. Todd if you ever want to guest post for PushyDreamers, I would be beyond grateful!

  9. Todd says:

I appreciate that. Do me a favor, send me an email through the contact page above with what you’re looking for in a guest post, and I’ll get back to you. Thanks.

It’s hard not to get discouraged when you’ve taken a few headers. The great thing is that tomorrow is a new day, and we get to do it all over again. I’ve had so many setbacks in my life, it’d make most people stop in their tracks. On the flipside, I’m also one very blessed man.
