Welcome to a new weekly segment that I like to call Power Friday. I recently revealed that I will be competing in a powerlifting meet in the near future. This will pretty much be random thoughts about the process of getting ready to compete.

I mentioned previously that I have not decided on a meet as of yet. Looking at the schedule of competitions taking place this year within the state of Texas, I have identified two possibilities.

The first is June 5th at the Longhorn Championships in McAllen, down in the south part of the state on the border. The next would be July 10th at the Summer Power Fest in Spring, north of Houston. Both have pros and cons. I’ll keep you posted on which I decide to go with.

In order to train for ultimate strength, I have incorporated a 5×5 routine that is outlined at StrongLift.com. This plan uses heavier than usual weights for five sets of five reps. It’s also a whole body type workout, aiming to increase the big three (squats, bench press, and deadlift).

The 5X5 is setup with two routines (A & B), alternating days (M-W-F). The A session uses squats, benchpress, reverse rows, push-ups, and reverse crunches. The B day uses squats again, overhead barbell press, deadlift, chin-ups, and planks.

Lift hard, and we’ll see you next week.
